Day 6 Sacred Valle of the Incas

Your guide will pick you up in the lobby of your hotel in Cusco at 8 am. You will be taken on a road that winds around the mountains north of Cusco.

Along the way, we will stop at a famous viewpoint known as El Mirador. From there, we can enjoy the view of the Sacred Valley and gain an understanding of Inca history. The Sacred Valley was one of the primary areas of Inca settlement, with an abundance of unusual fertile plains in this high-altitude Andean region.

You will also witness extensive contour terracing and irrigation channels built by the Incas.

Later, we will head to the ruins of Pisac. Here, you will witness and learn about Inca culture, see incredible stone artwork, and impressive agricultural terraces.

After exploring, we will return to the town of Pisac to stop at a bustling craft market.

After spending some time strolling through the market looking for bargains, we will meet for lunch at a local Andean restaurant.

This meal is not included in the tour, so if you prefer a different restaurant, you have other options.

After lunch, we will drive along the Urubamba River to the town of Ollantaytambo. Once we arrive in Ollantaytambo, we will visit the ruins, a significant Inca construction area built during the height of the Inca Empire.

This is an extraordinary Inca site because you can find rock formations that represent the Inca god, Wiracocha.

We will spend the night in Ollantaytambo to start our Inca Trail early the next day.

  • Meals: Breakfast at the hotel

Day 7 Inca Trail - 2 Days / 1 Night

“Your day will begin with an early morning pick-up from your accommodation in Ollantaytambo, around 05:30 am.

From here, we will head to the train station to catch the 06:10 am train to the town of Aguas Calientes.

The train journey runs along the Urubamba River, where you will have spectacular views of Inca terraces along the valley, snow-capped mountains, and the mighty Urubamba River.

The train ride will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and will take us directly to the start of the hike, commonly known as KM 104 or Chachabamba, located at 2,150 meters above sea level.

Upon arrival at the trailhead, we will pass through the first checkpoint, and you will have time to prepare for the day’s hike.

At this point, you will meet your trekking chef and porters, who will provide you with a snack for the hike, and you will begin the hike.

Make sure to bring your original passport, as this is the first checkpoint along the Inca Trail.

After passing the first checkpoint, you will visit the first Inca site, called Chachabamba, which in ancient times served as an Inca control point for entry onto the Inca Trail, and you will have a brief guided tour to understand its significance.

It is also here where we will take a moment for a group photo.

After the archaeological site, the hike will begin with a gentle uphill ascent until it converges with the Classic Inca Trail. Along the hike, you will have wonderful views of Mount Machu Picchu, the Urubamba River, and other surrounding Inca sites.

You will also pass by some waterfalls, providing a perfect opportunity to refresh yourself. The trail itself has some flat sections as well as some short uphill and downhill walks.

It also has steps arranged in sections that can be narrow in some areas but not dangerous.

After walking for approximately 3 hours, you will arrive at the most beautiful Inca site on the Inca Trail, Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young) at 2,650 meters above sea level.

Here, you will enjoy this archaeological site, with impressive water fountains, temples, and agricultural terraces.

The backdrop of Wiñay Wayna will also impress you, dropping off a cliff, with beautiful mountains surrounding the area in perfect harmony.

From Wiñay Wayna, we will continue for about 10 minutes to stop at the campsite of the same name to recharge, where our chef will be happy to serve lunch, and after a short rest, we will continue with the hike.

From this point, the hike becomes easier, passing through a lush forest typical of the high jungle area, which will lead us to the Sun Gate, from where we will have an impressive and picturesque view of Machu Picchu.

At this place, you will have enough time to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landmarks before continuing our descent to Machu Picchu and the town of Aguas Calientes. A great advantage of this hike is that by the time we reach Machu Picchu, most travelers will have gone home. This will leave the views of Machu Picchu almost empty.

From Machu Picchu, we will take the bus to Aguas Calientes and head to your hotel.

After some rest, we will gather as a group and go to one of the restaurants, considered one of the best restaurants in Aguas Calientes. After dinner, we recommend going to bed early to make the most of the next day.

  • Accommodation: 3-star hotel.
  • Meals: Breakfast (at the hotel), lunch, and dinner.
  • Entrance Fees: Included.”

Day 8 Visit to Machu Picchu

“Today will be the most important day of your journey.

To make the most of the day, we suggest all our groups have an early breakfast to catch one of the first buses to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu (starting at 5:30 a.m.).

The hotel will store your luggage while you are in Machu Picchu.

This way, you are only suggested to take your personal backpack with all the essentials for the Machu Picchu visit. The bus journey from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu will take approximately 30 minutes.

Once at Machu Picchu, your guide will introduce you to the beauty of Machu Picchu.

You will head directly to the classic photo spot located at the upper part, where you will enjoy the sunrise and the enigmatic landscape of Machu Picchu.

Your guide will lead you through the main sectors of the citadel for a total of 2.5 hours.

During this guided tour, you will learn more about the history and culture of the Inca Empire.

At the end of the tour, you will have some time to explore the lower part of Machu Picchu on your own.

If you have arranged an additional hike, such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, your guide will show you where to start this hike.

For your return from Machu Picchu, we recommend starting to make your way back to the town of Aguas Calientes at least 2 hours before your train departure.

Your guide will inform you of your train schedules before your return.

The train journey from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo will take approximately 2 hours.

In Ollantaytambo, our staff will be waiting for you by the station’s exit gate, ready to take you back to Cusco in a private transport. The return journey to Cusco will be approximately 2 hours, and the day’s service concludes at your hotel in Cusco.

OPTIONS:

Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain are additional hikes available once inside Machu Picchu. Any of the additional hikes can be done after your guided visit to Machu Picchu and must be arranged in advance. Both hikes are subject to availability and have an additional cost of USD $75 per person.

  • Accommodation: 3-star hotel.
  • Meals: Breakfast (at the hotel).
  • Entrance Fees: Included.”

Day 9 Rainbow mountain

“We will pick you up for the Rainbow Mountain hike at 4:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. from any hotel, Airbnb, or hostel in Cusco.

It will be a 2½ hour drive to the start of the trail; we will arrive around 7 a.m. Here, at the beginning of the trail, our chef will prepare a delicious breakfast including coffee, hot chocolate, tea, bread, fruit salad, eggs, and hot drinks.

Cusco’s elevation is 3300 m / 11,300 ft, and the starting point of the trail called Phulawasipata is at 4200 m / 14,300 ft.

Cusco’s weather is usually quite cold, and the beginning of the trail is even colder, so it’s early in the morning. Make sure to bring a warm jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves.

After breakfast, we will take about a 2-hour uphill hike to the Rainbow Mountain range. At a slower pace, it could be 2¾ hours, or if you are really fit, fast, and well acclimated, some people can do it in 1½ hours.

The hike includes some brief breaks where the guide will explain important information about the mountains and the geography of the area. You might have the chance to see some locals, including llamas and alpacas that frequent this area.

The trail itself is quite wide and helpful for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. The hike is best during the dry season as the trails are not paved.

The trail can be a bit dusty and in the rainy season, it can be slippery as it may be wet. However, with good waterproof hiking shoes and trekking poles, you’ll be fine. This is your chance to see why Rainbow Mountain has become a delight for Instagrammers according to CNBC!

Upon reaching the top of Rainbow Mountain, around 9 a.m., you will be at an elevation of 6384 m / 20,944 ft, making it one of the highest mountains in Peru.

After giving you some time to take some precious photos, your guide will share some interesting facts about this fascinating place, such as why the colors? – and also share some details about Inca history.

A few last photos of this spectacular mountain, and we will start our descent. We do this a little differently than other groups. Instead of walking the same route as them, we walk to a viewpoint to see the Red Valley and continue our hike.

This valley is the icing on the cake, and many of our hikers say it’s even better than Rainbow Mountain! It’s about a 2 and a half hour downhill hike from Rainbow Mountain to the end of the trail, which is near where we started the hike. Here you will enjoy a fresh meal prepared by your chef, including cold drinks, snacks, soup, and the main course.

After lunch, it will be another 2½ hour drive to Cusco, where we will drop you off at your hotel around 5:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Your guide will go over the activities for the next day.
